Erasmus Mundus is a European cooperation and mobility programme in the field of higher education. The first phase of the programme occurred between 2004 and 2008; at present the second phase covers the period 2009-2013.

The aim of Erasmus Mundus is to enhance the quality of higher education by offering financial support to institutions through three actions:

• Action 1 – Erasmus Mundus Joint Programmes: implementation of joint programmes at Masters (Action 1A) and Doctorate (Action 1B) levels, and award of individual scholarships/fellowships;

• Action 2 – Erasmus Mundus Partnerships: partnerships with countries covered by ENPI, DCI, EDF and INPA instruments (EMA 2-Strand 1) and partnerships with countries and territories covered by the industrialized countries instrument- ICI (EMA 2-Strand 2);

• Action 3 – Promotion of European Higher Education.
